Let me tell you about Balvenie.

She's the one at the front of the herd when you come into the field. Already there, already watching, already wondering what you've got in your hands and whether there's anything worth having in your pockets. She'll let you scratch her head, lean into it, and give you that look like 'You had me at Hello'.

And then just when everyone's relaxed, she'll decide it's time to canter off across the field for no reason whatsoever, setting the whole herd off, everyone careering around bucking and swishing their tails in a great glorious parade, Balvenie lifting her chonky knees and leading the charge.

She's not underconfident. She has never been underconfident in her life. She's bossy and funny and completely certain that whatever is happening, she should be in the middle of it.

The colours in this one just felt like her, loud, joyful, a lot going on, no apologies. That glorious, chaotic mane in every colour I had on my palette at the time.
