He's decked himself out in bracken and foliage, which is apparently a real thing stags do as the rut approaches, making themselves look bigger, more impressive, more worth taking seriously. The intention is very much to be fearsome and magnificent.

The effect is slightly shambolic and I love him for it.

He's doing his absolute best and you can tell. All that effort, all that bracken balanced precariously on an enormous set of antlers, and then he turns and there we are, just wandering through the woods, catching him in the middle of it all. He holds our gaze anyway. Fair play to him.

The woods around him are that gorgeous late summer palette, deep teal and warm gold, before everything turns. It felt like that atmospheric moment when summer is just thinking about becoming autumn.

He's available as a framed and unframed canvas print, and honestly, he's one of those pictures that rewards a proper look. There's a lot going on, and all of it is him trying his very best.
