When I painted this beauty, I was determined to do justice to his iconic plumage and swagger!
SAPPHIRE DANDY knows exactly what he's doing. He's standing perfectly still, watching you, letting the tail do the talking. One hundred and thirty centimetres of jewel-bright plumage fanned out behind him - every feather an event. He's wearing a tiny crown and he's entirely aware of it.
There's something theatrical about him, and yet he's so chilled. He's just waiting to see if you're worthy of the room he's about to take over.
Sapphire Dandy is an original oil painting in impasto technique — thick, luxurious paint on a 130 x 100cm gallery-wrapped canvas. At this scale, the texture and colour together are something else entirely.
